The Local Area
The Dartmoor Suite is perfectly located to maximise your enjoyment of the beautiful and rugged landscape of Dartmoor National Park, with its diverse range of amazing outdoor activities.
From the doorstep you can enjoy walking the moors, a favourite with old and young, and there are spectacular routes in the local area, from gentle strolls to some which would challenge even the most able-bodied!
Horse riding is another popular pastime here in the land of the Dartmoor pony. We have two friendly equines of our own here; Norman, a young pure bred Arabian gelding, and Isra, a Welsh mountain pony. You will certainly see them from time to time in the fields opposite the house - do speak to Emma if you would like to meet them.
There are also many wild ponies, often to be found wondering up and down the road in front of the house; they usually have time to stop for a carrot or a photograph! There are riding stables just up the road at Babeny with many horses, catering for all riding abilities and requirements.
There is superb kayaking and canoeing locally as the Dart has some of the best mid grade white water in the UK: access to it is only a mile down the road.
Cyclists who aren’t afraid of a few 20% climbs are in for a treat, with the road outside the house often featuring on the Dartmoor Classic Sportive amongst other events. (More information on our Cycling page). For those that prefer a little assistance you can hire eBikes locally.
Dartmoor is crisscrossed with tracks and bridleways, making it a haven for mountain biking.
The main town serving us here at Poundsgate is Ashburton, just off the A38, with a range of unique independent shops, artisan food suppliers and cafes. There are other local villages and towns that are great for nosing around in and getting food and drinks, including Princetown, Widecombe-in-the-Moor and Tavistock.
If you need more inspiration there is plenty on the Dartmoor tourist information web site.
Eating and drinking
There are several great pubs and restaurants close by.
- You can walk to the Tavistock Inn in Poundsgate - it’s about 200 metres away and is very popular with locals and holiday makers alike. Other local venues we’d recommend are;
- The Forest Inn in Hexworthy.
- The Rugglestone Inn in Widecombe.
- The Warren House Inn near Postbridge.
Whilst this is only a tiny selection of the many food and drink venues across Dartmoor, it does represent our personal recommendation based on either the delicious food or the great fun we have had!
The dartmoor suite costs £100 per night. CAll or email for availability & bookings;
